I first met the designer and inventor of the Qube filtration system in Japan, it was late October 2000 and as I recall our meeting took place at Tosio Sakai’s world renowned premises ( Isawa Nishkigoi Centre) located in Isawa.
Since that first meeting we became good friends and have remained so ever since. A few years later while enjoying a moderate beer or two in Nomolle, a small Yakatori bar in Nagaoka. Tony mentioned to me he was designing a new filtration system. This system would replace his existing systems and would help reduce his running costs by a significant amount, the filter would also have to give him better water clarity than he was already achieving. Listening to Tony this was not going to be an easy task as anybody who has visited his premises could testify his water quality and clarity was second to none. I suppose most people listening in would dismiss this as yet another filter to conquer the world of Koi. I must admit I was intrigued by Tony’s vision and the design concept was very different from anything I had seen or heard of before, especially the filter media which he had already designed called ORBS.
A few Years had passed when I got a call from Tony asking me to Judge a Koi Show. The show would be held outside his premises; He also promised me a first glimpse at his new filtration system.
My first impressions of the filter which now had a name “The-Qube” was how incredibly small it was. Tony gave me a demonstration as to how it worked and cleaned. It was after this demonstration he showed me the water clarity. I can honestly say that it was amazing and the Koi looked exceptional. I have been in the Koi industry since 1980 and have seen many filtration systems and installed most of them. Since that introduction to The-Qube I have installed many for myself and Shirley Aquatics I have installed these fantastic filters on many ponds.
To date the results have been amazing both with water quality and clarity. The Koi seem to take on a different dynamic both with feeding and behavioural differences to anything I have seen previously. The ease of cleaning is great with very little water used. Also The-Qubes use very low wattage pumps which all add up to a very ecologically friendly system. One of my biggest challenges in recent years was to install The-Qubes in South Africa. This was at a renowned koi enthusiast Roy Pillays house which you can all read about. Another project in Rugby last year was again a challenge but The-Qube filtration system was a great success. I would like to state I am not an expert on the scientific readings but being in Koi from 1980 I can honestly recommend this system as the best I have used.
